Multi Layered - block print
Spirit animals carry meaning, wisdom, and power across history and various cultures. For this project, you will pull from the ancient wisdom and mythology of Celtic, Chinese Astrology, Hinduism, and/or Native American Symbolism Finding out the meaning of your spirit animal or totem is like a going on a journey, with the power animal as your guide, you may see beyond the basic symbolism to connect with the true essence of yourself. Once you’ve discovered your spirit animal you will create two designs (one layer will embody the “realism” of the creature, whereas the other design will offer a “geometric” interpretation. Both layers will be printed using a variety of methods in order to explore both the RELIEF and INTAGLIO printing techniques.
Terms to KNOW for this project:
|
- Relief Printing - Creating a design with raised and recessed lines and shapes. Prints are made by rolling the ink onto the raised surfaces and transferring to paper with pressure.
- Intaglio- Creating a design with incised and recessed lines and marks. Prints are made by rubbing the ink into the incensed lines, wiping the surface clean and printing with a press (high pressure) onto damp paper.
- Dry Point- A direct intaglio process were the lines and marks are scratched into a metal or plexiglas plate.
- Etching- An intaglio process that involves acid "biting" a design into a metal plate. The design is created by scratching through a protective coating or "hard ground" exposing the metal for it to be eaten away by the acid.
- Stylus- A sharp tool used to scratch in lines into an intaglio plate- A sharp tool used to scratch in lines into an intaglio plate
- Tarlatan- A coarse weave starched fabric used to wipe the ink from an intaglio plate.
- Printing Press- A machine used to apply even pressure to the back of paper- thus transferring the ink from a plate.
- Registration- The process of carefully aligning layers of a print, and aligning the print to the paper (keeping clean and even borders).
- Form- The element of art that describes objects in 3-dimension or with the illusion of depth and volume.
- Value (Value Balance)- The element of art that describes light falling on an object. Usually a range from white to black or "high contrast" which is equal parts black and white.
- Texture- The actual surface quality of an object as perceived through touch or the implied surface quality of an object in a painting or a drawing.
- Variety- The principle of design that describes the quality or state of being different or diverse; the absence of uniformity, sameness, or including imperfections, a range of sizes, thicknesses, and angles.
- Abstract- Art that exists in idea or theory (usually a simplified, skewed, or exaggerated version of reality).
- Non-Objective Abstraction - Art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
- Rhythm- The Principle of Design that describes a harmonious sequence or correlation of colors or elements, usually repeating in a somewhat regular pattern (often increasing/decreasing)
- Geometric vs Organic - Geometric is "mathematical" organic looks like it natural irregular and/or curvy.
Collect Visual References- various poses &textures
(resize them roughly 4x5in)
Make 4 Thumbnail sketches:
think layers, touch the edges, balance black & white
Finalize both layers of your design:
**Keep all attempts**
Level 1 (Two layers don't have to specifically align)
Level 2 & Adv (Must have registration of the design layers)
Fill the space (limited white)
Use a variety of toolmarks/textures and values
Repeat elements to create "rhythm"
