The Challenge: Use all the shapes to make an animal
Steps & Criteria:
- Initial your tangrams then carefully cut them out. Keep your tangrams separate from your neighbors.
- Play around and form a variety of animals (5 or more) using all of the shapes. document each with a photograph.
- Finalize your favorite arrangement with (1/8 in) space between each shape. Then place a piece of final paper over the design and use the side of the crayon to make a FROTTAGE- rubbing,
- Subdivide a few of the tangrams so you have more pieces and continue playing with the pieces until you find a new arrangement that you like.
- Use Elmer's glue to adhere the pieces to a piece of cardboard. Add to the design by cutting and pealing away some shapes to create a low relief COLLOGRAPH plate.
- Roll ink onto the surface of the collograph plate, place a piece of final paper on top and use the pressure from a baren or your hand to transfer the ink. Go all the way to the edges to make a nice final print, repeat the printing steps so you have an EDITION of 3 perfect prints.
- Make one more collograph print on cardstock. When the ink is dry, use an X-acto knife to cut around and drop out the tangram shapes, leaving the spaces between in tact. The "negative spaces" of your design should be all together in one piece - This piece is a STENCIL.
- Use a dry brush or sponge technique to dab ink through the open areas of the design. Create 5 different STENCIL prints.
- Watch demonstrations for ways to experiment and explore the stencil prints (OFF SET)
- Using a combination of the FROTTAGE, COLLOGRAPH, OFF SET, STENCIL and other experimental techniques create 5 MULTI-LAYER MONOPRINTS - inspired by the works of Sigmar Polke.
- Give a different creative title to each of the works in your series. Sign your name on each print.
- Things to try: VIEW EXAMPLES AND DEMONSTRATIONS HERE
- Adding foil to the collograph print
- Printing in multiple colors and letting the ink overlap
- Off-set roller transfer
- Use the stencil to print both the positive and negative shapes
- Make a blend roll for the background
- Use a small brayer to ink various colors on the plate at the same time
- COLLAGE- cut and glue multiple prints together to create a new design.
- bubble wrap and other found textures, vegetable or flower stamps
